If you have a degree and are looking to teach in Thailand then there are certainly great opportunities available. Typically in the past having a degree was like a golden ticket for embarking on a career teaching English in Thailand. With a huge demand for learning English, graduates wanting to teach as a way to fund time living abroad could do so easily if they had a degree certificate in any major discipline.
Today, with Thailand’s ever growing economy and education reforms this is no longer the case. Simply being a native English speaker with a degree doesn't mean you necessarily have the knowledge or ability to teach English as a foreign language.
A successful career in teaching and developing ongoing employment with a well suited school is not just about being able to speak English, it’s also about having the skills to integrate effectively with colleagues and cultural differences around you. Having a degree may help you secure a teaching job initially but without the ability to teach well and demonstrate characteristics admired by schools, it’s unlikely you will remain employed. Misunderstanding about what’s required of English teachers in Thailand today has a negative effect on education. Students don’t build confidence to use English consistently and teachers become distanced from developing professional relationships with those around them.
The facts about teaching with a degree
Ensuring a successful start to teaching in Thailand
Unlike some organizations who provide job placement services based simply on whether you have a degree, we ensure that you have adequate preparation to develop a career teaching in Thailand. We do this because more often than not native English speakers with no formal teaching knowledge do not pass the probationary period with a school and can be searching for a new job earlier than expected.
This is not only disappointing for you but also counter-productive for the school. As part of our pledge to developing education quality in the northeast through sustainable means, guaranteeing you are well prepared improves your chances of building rapport with a school and developing your career.
